Quick guide
How to use the complex fraction calculator
- Enter the numerator and denominator of the fraction above the main fraction bar.
- Enter the numerator and denominator of the fraction below it.
- Select Simplify complex fraction.
- Review the reciprocal, multiplication, and reduction steps.
How complex fractions are simplified
The large fraction bar means division. A complex fraction such as (3/4)/(5/6) can therefore be written as 3/4 ÷ 5/6. Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
Multiply the numerators and denominators to get 18/20, then divide both terms by 2. The simplified answer is 9/10.
When a complex fraction is undefined
The lower fraction acts as the divisor. If its numerator is zero, the entire lower fraction equals zero and the complex fraction is undefined. Denominators must also be greater than zero.
